About the Author

Jerry Lanson is Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism at Emerson College and served as its first chair. A former editor at the San Jose Mercury and an experienced writing coach, he is the coauthor of News in a New Century: Reporting in an Age of Converging Media (1999).

Mitchell Stephens is Professor in the Department of Journalism at New York University. He is the author of A History of News (OUP, 2007), the rise of the image the fall of the word (OUP, 1998), and Broadcast News (2004).

A good introductory overview

Without question this is the best introductory journalism textbook on the market. I have used it in my classes for several years. The chapters are short but informative, and the exercises realistic. Primarily focussed on print, the discussion of broadcast journalism is sounder than that found in many books dedictaed to that subject.

I ordered this book back in mid-July 2011 & I got it within five days. The book was well handled in shipping & it was in great shape when I got it. I read through some of the chapters already. There's some great stuff in it, hopefully, It'll help me pass my journalism writing class with an "A."

Good read overall but missing something...

I was feeling nostalgic recently so I ordered this since the BCR were one of my favorite bands as a kid. Leslie was my favorite, although I was too young for real love, just puppy love. Still, I was wondering what he would have to say, and overall I was pleased with the book. It's an interesting, funny read for BCR fans and fans of 70s music. He had some really funny anecdotes and it was very enlightening to learn what went on behind the scenes. He describes how it was both exciting and scary to be chased by so many screaming girls. I think he downplays how Tam treated them; he has implied in other interviews being fearful of Tam and how big and scary he was. There were two things that bothered me about the book. One was the way he continually dumped on Eric. Les must have really, really disliked Eric at the time he wrote the book because Eric comes off pretty bad. He does give Eric some credit for some of the songs he wrote and also for apparently urging the other band members to pay more attention to the business side of music (advice which they all ignored). The other thing I didn't like was that, given his admission of what Tam did to him and his subsequent sexual behavior, Les comes off as anti-gay. It's rather hypocritical given he has admitted to being bisexual, whatever the circumstances. I understand he wasn't ready to admit to it at the time he wrote the book, but it just doesn't seem right that he implies things about the other guys while not stating what he knew about himself. But it must have been a hard thing to admit, so can't knock him too much. Oh, and I wish he had included more pics from their heyday, but other than that, it was entertaining to read the behind the scenes action. He can definately come across as arrogant and a brat, but still manages to be surprisingly sympathetic. You can feel the genuine love for his parents, and anyone who loves his folks that much can't be that bad.

Must Read!

When I first saw that my childhood idol had written a book, I figured that I was in for some light reading and nostalgia. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was one of the most interesting books I've ever read. I was taken on a journey from an impoverished childhood, to extreme fame, to one of the biggest rip offs in rock history. Throughout this journey I was treated to McKeown's unique humor, honesty, and intelligence.
I recommend this book not just to Bay City Roller fans, but to anybody who is interested in seeing the real life behind the elusive dream of being a star.

Love at first read

After falling in love with Les again 38 years after my initial crush the first thing I did was order his book. I couldn't believe I was actually going to read something that he wrote. And I wasn't just reading it I was hearing it. The book was so personal I could hear his heart and his voice as I poured over the pages in one night. There are things in his life that he shared that will bring you to tears and then there are times when you will literally laugh out loud. He is an excellent writer and who better to hear about Les McKeown from than the man himself! I loved the book so much I think I will cuddle up with Les again tonight !

Scholarship + Spiritual Depth = Great Commentary

I have over 100 commentaries on the Gospel of John and none of them even comes close to this volume. Critical and exegetical issues are treated fully and fairly. Footnotes are jam-packed with excerpts from numerous authors holding differing viewpoints. Evaluations of other positions are peacable yet thorough. Morris brings out the richness of John's message on every page. I recently preached on John 1:1 and this commentary was eminently useful for understanding the background and meaning of the text. Massive conservative scholarship, a lucid and penetrating style, profound insight and, above all, spirtual depth make this volume a masterpiece! Morris is not the only commentator on I consult, but he is always the first and usually the most rewarding.

Thorough and Readable Commentary

Leon Morris, principal emeritus of Ridley College (Melbourne, Australia) and author of over forty books, masterfully comments on St. John's Gospel.

The two aspects of this commentary I most appreciate are the conservative nature of the commentary and its high readability. In this commentary, the reader will find no historical-criticism. Rather, the author has faith in the inerrancy of Scripture and treats this portion of Scripture accordingly. Happily, when difficulties arise between the Synoptic Gospels and the Gospel according to John, he acknowledges these difficulties, lists several possible ways in which they can be reconciled, then ends with a statement reminding the reading not to be unreasonably dogmatic about such a difficult thing. Morris' conservatism and respect for the text is refreshing. Morris also writes in a very readable, fluid style. I found myself reading the nearly 800 pages of text much quicker than I expected to, mainly because the narrative structure was captivating and a joy to read. Morris frequently ties John's writings to the other Gospels, the Old Testament, Jewish/Roman history, and the post-Ascension church. He also has helped my understanding of John by pointing out his unique writing style (double meanings, playing loose with quotes, fondness for numbers, time, and geography, etc.)

There were aspects of this book that I did find frustrating. The most frustrating for me was Morris' anti-sacramentarian treatment of John 6 and the account of blood and water flowing from Jesus wound. Morris argues that John 6 should be read primarily as Jesus "teaching about spiritual realities...but...there may be a secondary reference to the sacrament(313)." However, he spends the following pages arguing against each and every perceived reference to the sacrament. I have strong beliefs that Jesus teaches primarily about the sacrament in these verses--that is my bias and I would like it do be shared by Morris--but the fact that he promises to address the sacramental teachings of Christ,then argues against his own stated view! I have a similar problem with Morris' treatment of blood and water flowing from Jesus' post-death wound as he barely addresses the belief that it is some reference to Communion and Baptism. A second issue I have with this book is the poor copy editing. The final pages of this book especially have frequent misspellings, misplaced commas, and extra letters inserted within common words ("nthe").

Overall, the weaknesses of this book do not even come close to overcoming the many, many positive aspects. I feel as if my insight into the writing style and theology of John has greatly increased because of Morris' book. Furthermore, I am anxious to continue my studies of both John and the Synoptics as a result of Morris' work. Highly recommended.

Clear - useful - readable

Leon Morris commentary on the Gospel of John is a must have for anyone building a library of Biblical commentaries. I have taught through this gospel on several occasions and have collected many great works on John. However, I always find myself comming back to this commentary by Leon Morris. It is not the only commentary to have of this great book but it is one that will contribute to your insight and understanding of John's message and meaning. Other key Bible commentaires on John are the classic by Godet, Beasley-Murray in the Word Bible Commentary and Ridderbos' theological commentary on the gospel of John. If you are just beginning to build your library, start with Morris. He covers all the major issues, doesn't hide from difficult questions and fairly present alternative positions. As a supplement to this work pick up Leon Morris' "Reflictions on the Gospel of John". More devotional in nature, it was originally written to compliment his NIC commenatry on John. However, last I checked this work is out of print but it can still be found via Amazon's out of print service. Morris' commentary on John and the Reflections offer the reader a great one-two punch. Either work can stand alone. These works make great gifts for the Bible student or your pastor if he doesn't already have them. You won't be disappointed!! Enjoy!

About the Author

Robert L. Shewfelt is professor emeritus of Food Science and Technology at the University of Georgia. He taught more than 10 courses at the university including Freshman Seminars on Chocolate Science and Coffee Technology. He also taught a Food Processing Lab as a virtual food company where each student had a position in the company that designed, manufactured, and tested the quality of four distinctly different processed food products. He continues to write about food science in his retirement.

Olusegun Obasanjo, soldier, statesman, author and farmer was born in Ibogun-Olaogun in what was then Abeokuta Province of 1930s colonial Nigeria. His career in the Nigerian Army would see him serve in the UN Peacekeeping Mission to the Congo in 1961, see him rise to the position of General Officer Commanding the 3rd Marine Commando Division of the Nigerian Army during the Civil War, and culminate in his appointment of Head of State, and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
He handed over power to a democratically-elected civilian administration in 1979 and retired to a life of farming. As a statesman he was called upon by the international community, in one instance to serve as co-chair of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons' Group constituted to work on negotiated settlement for the ending of the South African Apartheid policy in 1985. He was also a candidate for the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1991. A fearless critic of bad government, he was jailed from 1995-1998 by the Abacha government.
Obasanjo was sworn-in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigerian on May 29 1999.
He stepped down from the presidency in 2007 at the end of his second term and returned to his farm. He is currently the chief promoter of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
Olusegun Obasanjo has authored several books, significant amongst them, My Command, about his experiences in the Nigerian Civil War; Not My Will, about his service to the nation as Military Head of State; This Animal Called Man, a philosophical reflection on the nature of man written during his time as a political prisoner; and Nzeogwu, about his friend and key figure in the January 1966 coup.

Contains a lot of new materials, a lot of insights into what goes on at the seat of power. Touches frankly on what has become Nigeria's worst enemy: a thoroughly corrupt system of government/governance.
Could have made a more engaging reading without the boring repetition of several speeches/addresses. Was silent on the author's socialization with the felon, Bode George, after the latter's release from prison.

Christine Sleeter, Ph.D., Professor Emerita at California State University Monterey Bay, is internationally known for her work in multicultural education. Engaging, and so "right" ~

"White Bread" engaged my heart and mind. I looked forward to turning each page. As a storyteller, Christine Sleeter made me care about Jessica, her central character. Sleeter delighted me with the insights Jessica acquired as she met challenges. I was struck by the book's authenticity, my ongoing awareness that Sleeter had walked in the moccasins of her central character.

As Jessica overcame emotional and intellectual challenges of researching the lives of her ancestors to find texture, color, and story, I pictured myself on a similar quest. What fun it would be, like Jessica, to undertake a journey of self-discovery. What if I found that I'm not simply "white bread," another undefined dot in the mass culture? Could I, too, then write rich stories about my ancestors?

As a high school English teacher, Jessica's other challenge was to make literature engaging not only for her white students, but also for her Mexican-American students. I marveled that in relating Jessica's struggle, Sleeter was so right on three counts: Jessica had to develop a relationship with her school's only Mexican-American teacher in order to learn how to excel in meeting this challenge. Jessica had to rely on her own strengths of character to find ways to cope with confrontations with other teachers and white parents who saw no reason for her to incorporate another culture into her teaching. Jessica had to find her own ways to build trust with parents of her Mexican-American students.

As we read, many like myself may be motivated to undertake our own journeys of self-discovery, learning more about ourselves by researching and imagining stories of our ancestors and the context of those stories. We will appreciate that Sleeter has provided us with a road map to guide our quest.

As an outgrowth of researching the lives of her ancestors and developing strategies to reach her Mexican-American students, Jessica experiences more connection between herself and others from different backgrounds. In Jessica, Sleeter has provided a realistic model for these changes. As I read I cheered for Jessica and learned from her. I treasure an author whose characters grow and who nourishes my own growth.

I thoroughly enjoyed Christine Sleeter's first novel White Bread. This book effectively weaves together two parallel stories, one of the main character Jessica's present day experiences as a new teacher in a bicultural school and the other of her German immingrant ancestors life in America in the 1800's.

I was able to get a good sense of Jessical from the beginning. I could feel her desire to be a good teacher, to know and understand her Latino students and their families. As a former teacher in a bilingul/bicultural school, I, too, had the awareness of the students' desire to
know their own history while at the same time learn about about their new home

Because Jessica is dealing with her own identity and feelings of isolation, she begins to research her German ancestory. This part of the book gave the historical experience of German immigrant in our country. I got to know Jessica's ancestors and their struggles in a new country. This opened up new insights on how different immigrants have been treated here. Jessica's letter to the editor really tied togerther the similarity between the German immigrant's struggles and today's Hispanic immigrants and gave a clear and positive ending to the book.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a better understading of immigratns and their struggles to become Americans., now and in the past.

Cultural Weaving

Dr. Sleeter has written a novel that all teachers should read and take to heart. Even though I teach high school, the journey Jessica takes applies to educators of all levels. Not only do we need to get to know our students, we need to get to know ourselves, so we can appreciate the cultures of everyone and recognize our potential prejudices. This is a very inspiring work, and I am thrilled that Dr. Sleeter took the time to invest her intellect to bring it to us.
