Gorgeous book

This book is a catalogue of the Fashioning Fashion historical clothing exhibit at LACMA [Los Angeles County Museum of Art]. Not only is the book huge with equally large, well-lit and clear color photos of breathtaking garments, but it expands upon the exhibit with additional photos and page after page of text. A brilliant book and must-have for anyone remotely interested in historical clothing or costume. Definitely worth the money, it is heavy and the photos are full-page. Excellent layout, well written and researched. Fantastic. While women's costumes always outnumber the men's in exhibits [and this is no exception], there are actually a good number of men's outfits, and what was chosen for display is.. the best. White suede riding breeches, not a mark on them. A silk Regency era top hat with a tiny flared brim. An 18th century silk satin suit embroidered in pink! Genius.

That said, the book is a poor mimic of the actual clothing. While this is one of the best costume books I have ever owned, it completely pales in comparison to the actual exhibit. I wouldn't have known how much better the clothes looked in person if I hadn't been to the actual exhibit. This is no slur upon the book-- there's just really no way to capture everything without seeing it yourself. All of the pieces shown are in absolutely mint condition, and they are clearly displayed up close, some even with a mirror behind the mannequin so you can see the back. A large 18th century embroidered satin piece is put under glass and hung on the wall, so you can see every perfect stitch, millimeters from your eyes.

It is the best costume exhibit I have seen thus far, and probably one of the best I will ever see. It is quite large, and there are no "filler" items. I don't even have a favorite piece because I can't possibly choose between them. Unbelievable. If you are anywhere near Los Angeles, go see this exhibit! It runs through March 6.

This book is outstanding! It's very informative and well-written, but of course the best part is all the great pictures of gorgeous clothing! I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in historical fashion.

Lavish details, lots of full shots

One of the best things about this beautiful book is that it does not stint on the extreme close up details such as methods of quality embroidery and stitching, yet it gives a balanced comparison between the close ups and the full shots on manikins so you can understand how they were used in context. I have both of the V&A fashion in detail books, which are so beautiful but one wishes one could see the entire finished product as well; this book does that. Covering the types of textiles used traditionally, tailoring, and even showing comparisons of how antique styles directly inspire and influence modern fashion (but sparingly fortunately), this book really is a nice comprehensive overview of European fashion from the mid 1700s to the early 1900s. The photographer did a fantastic job!

Good depending on your background and goals

The book is solidly written; however, I do feel there is a slight misrepresentation when the book states it is good for beginning photogrammetry. If you are familiar with photogrammetry, the book is a useful reference and provides details on a variety of relevant topics. However, individuals with no knowledge of the topic will find many of the topics unclear,with the authors presuming the reader knows information not presented in the book. There are a large quanitity of formulas presented; however, there are errors in some of the formulas and often, the formulas are not completely explained. If you are not familiar with upper level math concepts like linear algebra, trig and calculus,following how the solutions were derived may be frustrating.
If this is a field you are interested in pursueing, the book may be worth getting. If you are more interested in an overview of photogrammetry, this is probably not the best fit.

Love this series

When I wrote this review I had not read the others in the series before it. I now have read them and I still believe you could read it as a standalone however I liked the whole series so I recommend reading the series.
I like this book and now I really need to read the others in the series. This book is #4 in a series however it does work as a standalone as much as you are not confused with what happens but I think some of the other characters may have been mentioned or explained in other books. I give the book 4 stars.

Again this was a novella and I wish it was longer. The shape shifters being different species of birds is a new one and I enjoyed it. We get to follow Lazar who shifts into a Falcon but is living with the Hawks at the present. The author gives you background on Lazar then ties it in with Sabrina later. I liked how this was done and I want to continue with the story also as I am seeing this plot line continuing.

I hope that Sabrina’s uncle and her friend get their book also. I enjoyed how Sabrina’s uncle was afraid of her friend but at the same time seemed to enjoy her being there also.

Fourth book in the Bird of Prey series and another winner.

Fourth book in the Bird of Prey series and another winner. Lazar, living with "the enemy" of his bird clan as he saved the king's mate of his enemy, could no long go home. A man of honor would not kill an innocent woman at the behest of his vicious king--we learn that by rights Lazar is the true king. He did not want the title but now that his half brother is ruling by cruelty he has reconsidered. Honor as a warrior doesn't hold true in his sex life. He is randy to say the least, thinking his true mate died in her youth and he would never have that place in his heart filled. Surprise, she isn't dead and both Lazar and Sabrina have been having hot dreams about each other for years, neither knowing the the other existed.

While visiting earth he finds her and discovers she has been hidden to protect her. He has to prove himself to her guardian/uncle worthy of her and ready to give up his bachelor ways.

Ms Roth gives us her humor with a feisty friend who attracts and scares the alpha warrior uncle. Hope we hear more about them in the future books. There are some surprises getting together. Sabrina doesn't fight much, her innocence slows her, however she wants to live out her dreams after meeting her dream lover. Circumstances and families keep them apart for a time.

The ending leaves us with a decision all have agreed on, without showing what happens. The book stands alone however we do want to continue on in their lives. Can't wait for the next book.

Manmeat and hot shifters!!!!

Lazar, an outcast from his own clan, has been living with "the enemy" since he saved the king's mate. He is warrior of honour and would not obey the instruction of his then king, and half brother. Lazar is the true king but did not want the title but his brother is ruling by cruelty. On the other hand he is a randy bird shifter and is happily bonking his way through the palace staff, believing his mate was killed whilst she was still a child. But he has been having erotic dreams of his mate and is tortured by what he cannot have. The females he has now want his body but still treat him as a traitor and injure him during lovemaking to show that they still think he is beneath them.

While visiting earth Lazar discovers his mate, Sabrina, was hidden to keep her from his brothers clutches due to a vague prophecy of her mating with the king of the clan. He now has to prove himself to her uncle that he is worthy of her and ready to give up his manwhoring ways.

There are some surprises getting together. Sabrina doesn't fight much but she has awesome aim with a bow and arrow. I loved her friend, Lisa. The whole manmeat thing had me in stitches and I hope we see her in a future book!!!

This book is about personal growth, but personal growth that is based on a view of acceptance that is dynamic and has nothing to do with acquiescence or resignation. The reader who is unfamiliar with Gnosticism, and Jungian psychology may find the supreme deity Abraxas, who is the embodiment of all qualities and their opposites, a tough pill to swallow inasmuch as he is presented not as an abstraction but as THE GOD and is to be understood as such by the reader. Demian, and his protege Sinclair, are saddened by the advent of the Great War, but they accept it and participate in it because to do otherwise would be to deny the dark and fateful origin of it and the ferment that leads to realization for mankind just as personal ferment leads to personal realization.

Dr. Hari M. Koduvely is an experienced data scientist working at the Samsung R&D Institute in Bangalore, India. He has a PhD in statistical physics from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, India, and post-doctoral experience from the Weizmann Institute, Israel, and Georgia Tech, USA. Prior to joining Samsung, the author has worked for Amazon and Infosys Technologies, developing machine learning-based applications for their products and platforms. He also has several publications on Bayesian inference and its applications in areas such as recommendation systems and predictive health monitoring. His current interest is in developing large-scale machine learning methods, particularly for natural language understanding.

Not sure about this one

Let me be frank: I don't like Packt, a publisher that saves money on editing and graphic design, and just keeps churning out un-edited, ugly books by authors who could not, or did not, go with a proper publisher. They give free e-books to reviewers, and many feel obliged to return the favor by posting super-positive, but detail-free "reviews", which don't mention any alternatives, and sometimes name-check a book's key terms, but in an odd way that suggests that they don't really know what those mean. Just look at the reviews, and ratings, of this book's fan Dipanjan Sarkar, for example. I have seen many Packt books, and many Dipanjans, and I am annoyed.

Anyway, this is not a five-star book. It is not a typical Packt book, in that Packt publishes IT books, and this is a formula-ridden statistics book that would be more at home in the catalog of an academic publisher like Springer or CRC-Hall. It starts with a concise if dry survey of Bayesian basics, and then surveys several Bayesian methods, implemented by specific R packages - "arm", "BayesLogit", "lda", "brnn", "bgmm", "darch". I see good things about the first part; the second one, on the other hand, came across as not very clearly written and too superficial to be useful: for example, I simply failed to understand the author's explanation of the Bayesian logit, and that should not have been complicated. The decision to go with specific R packages is understandable, but the failure to even mention BUGS, JAGS or STAN - the popular, general tools - is not.

I don't understand who the book is for. The people who can handle the integrals, so to speak, will find the relevant R packages on their own. The less technical readers, on the other hand, will be put off by the academic style. My suggestion to the latter is "Doing Bayesian Data Analysis" by Kruschke. There is also a good, accessible book which uses Python rather than R, by Davidson-Pilon.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Strong basis for best solutions!

This book is good, have a clear reading, structured information in good steps, exercises and references, these last two are very useful when you want more detailed information. Statistics aren't easy at least for me, but I could learn the advantages of Bayesian inference.

I think that the first chapters are essential introduction to the subject and the tools to work, but, the real what you really want comes in modules, first you have an understatement of the use and capabilities of principles of Bayesian inference, after that you have notion of Bayesian and R, than you start to use both in machine learning. Machine Learning have many uses, so I think that the applicability of the book tend to infinity, I really liked that the author gives base of Bayesian neural networks in chapter 8, talking about deep belief networks the advantages and like in all the other subjects he gives good references to go deep and learn for sure. You will understand wow structured is the book when you achieve the last chapter and see how much you've learned and that the complexity of your projects achieve, all the chapters are like a stair degree.

My experience reading this was good because I feel that I've learned and the exercises make me work with, Bayesian inference is different from classic statistics, you can you this to solve yor project needs, I certainly recommend this book, is hard to find such information well explained like in this book.

The book provides a quick review of all the main things you need to know when running Bayesian analyses in R. It will not make you a Bayesian wizard, but it could serve as a quick introduction to Bayesian analyses in R.

A point of critic is that at some places I felt that the author could have provided a bit more guidance on interpretation. For example, chapter 5 explains how to fit a Bayesian model and how to simulate the posterior distribution, but does not devote a single line to explain how a user should interpret and use that simulation compared with the model coefficients. Level 7 paperback book

read this in high school.. now 35 years later bought it for my son. tried to read it myself again.. but the print is too small and my eye's are too old. wish this was in audio book form. Deep underground a tech who's job is to launch a counterstrike if the ficticious nation is ever attacked tells his story. Sealed 7 levels underground, each level providing more and more protection and more and more important functions. If my 35 year old memory serves me right this was a fantastic thriller.

Gripping...

The diary of the PBX officer was compelling. I could not put it down. I became absolutely engrossed in the day to day entries. Although set in the 50's, the tale itself is timeless. My only criticism would be that I would've rather the diary stood on its own without the essays before and after it. They were tedious and unnecessary as the story itself speaks volumes.

I really wanted to like this one, but the premise of the book is rather dated, very Dr Strangelove with (spoiler warning) the missile command crew and their support staff (and children to be) being forcibly incarcerated in a bunker for 500 years. And they all have stupid names like X-127 instead of real names. And with the exception of a couple of souls, everyone seems quite happy to be there and no one seems at all perturbed that they are locked underground. The characters all act in an extremely unrealistic manner and to cap it all, there is a pre-quel involving visitors from a Martian archaeological expedition (groan). I think I might be over hard on the style of sci-fi from that date because it will inevitably date, but this book could be re-written too much better effect, it could make an excellent film as well in an updated version as there is much to discuss in the premise. I can see the importance of this book in terms of a historical and social capture of a time, and also in the context of awareness raising for the issue (as the author explains in his interesting preface) but I couldn't get away from the dated style. Sorry. :-(

In May 1866, just a year after the Civil War ended, Memphis erupted in a three-day spasm of racial violence that saw whites rampage through the city's black neighborhoods. In 1866, Memphis was a powder keg. Four years of occupation by Federal troops had naturally engendered resentment. Some of the occupation units included African American troops, whose supposed “undisciplined” behavior caused seething hostility among the white “old citizens” of Memphis. Also despised were the white Northerners who flooded into the city at the conclusion of the Civil War. These included highly motivated men and women determined to help uplift emancipated slaves, as well as merchants and “carpetbaggers” out for a quick profit. The explosion came in May. Ash, professor emeritus of history at the University of Tennessee, makes it clear that this was not a “race riot.” Rather, for three days, whites, with the acquiescence and some participation by municipal police, attacked and murdered blacks, raped women, and burned black schools and churches. Ash also shows how the revelations of a subsequent congressional investigation caused outrage in the North and helped radical Republicans shape a tougher Reconstruction policy. Historian Steven V. Ash introduces his new book, _A Massacre in Memphis: The Race Riot That Shook the Nation One Year after the Civil War_ (Hill and Wang) with a surprise: there has never before been a book about the riot. Even more surprising is that there are lots of primary sources for a historian to mine, for the incident was well documented at the time by investigations afterwards. The three days and nights of violence against former slaves are almost forgotten; Memphis, Ash says, was awash in centennial commemorations of the Civil War, but when 1966 came around, there was silence about the massacre. Ash speculates that maybe the sesquicentennial in 2016 can be made different, and if it is, the difference will surely be due to his dramatic and thoroughly documented book. Ash has given a comprehensive portrait of the riot, describing the complicated social forces that went before, the horrifying days of the massacre itself, and the significant effects on national politics.

The riot was a product of many changes in Memphis and southern society after the war. The biggest change was that there were no more slaves, and as unfair as slavery had been, it had proved to be relatively stable. No one had figured out the role that the freed slaves were going to play. The former slaves who came to Memphis jostled with plenty of other groups, especially the newly-arrived Irish-Americans who made up much of the city's political leadership and most of its policemen and firefighters. On 30 April 1866 there was a self-limited exchange of blows between former black soldiers and Memphis police. It was a spark that led to mob action, with hundreds of policemen and other citizens, almost all Irish-American, taking the opportunity to beat, kill, rape, and rob from black men, women and children. There was little black resistance to the overwhelming violence committed largely by the police and other government members. A tally afterwards shows what happened: 46 black people were killed, 75 injured, a hundred were robbed; and as the mob took to arson, ninety homes, four churches, and twelve schools were burned to the ground. There were exactly three whites who died in the riot; one accidentally shot himself, one was shot by a fireman who mistook him for black, and one was shot in a bar by a fireman for the unspeakable offense of talking affably to a freedman. No rioters were ever arrested. None went to trial. No freedmen who suffered harm, theft, or arson was ever recompensed for the loss. The extensive investigations after the riot were forwarded to General in Chief of the Army Ulysses S. Grant, who sent them to the Secretary of War and then to President Andrew Johnson, who forwarded the report to the Attorney General, who recommended that it be returned to the Secretary of War for filing, and said that the states had to handle such matters on their own.

Ash shows a larger historical picture of how "the Memphis riot, having helped usher in the extraordinary experiment of Radical reconstruction, also helped obliterate it and pave the way for its successor, the New South era of black disenfranchisement and Jim Crow segregation." It was one of many factors tipping the balance of power against President Johnson, who was soon to be impeached. But the riot was eventually forgotten; the stories Americans told of reconstruction had little place for the Irish thugs in Memphis, and as Ash writes, the Memphis riot may have seemed in the days of lynching "but a distant precursor to present horrors, a faded sepia image among the fresh portraits rendered in blood-red." Let his remarkable, exciting account and explanation bring the riot back to its place in history.

Little known history

If you are interested in post-Civil War racial tension, this is an excellent work. Focusing on the Memphis race riot, Ash characterizes the riot in which white citizens sought out and slayed their black neighbors, as not a problem of the prevailing racism of elite southern whites, but the racist hatred of their poorer Irish neighbors. Perpetuated and driven by an Irish mob, and fueled by rumor and newspaper sensationalism, the Memphis Massacre is a conundrum to study. Ash does an excellent job of presenting all of the sides in a factual and accurate account.
