Scattered and Conflicting

This edition really does not have many changes from the revised edition so not worth the extra money. However the book itself is easy to read but the information through out the book conflicts itself and is a bit scattered. Our teacher throws out questions on tests because the book can't give a clear concise answer so it's not worth testing on.

About the Author
In addition to being a best selling textbook author, ALAN BRINKLEY is the Allan Nevins Professor of History and former Provost at Columbia University. He is the author of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, which won the 1983 National Book Award; The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War; and Liberalism and its Discontents. His most recent books are John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963 and The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century both published recently. He was educated at Princeton and Harvard and taught previously at MIT, Harvard, and the City University Graduate School before joining the Columbia faculty In 1991. In 1998-1999, he was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. He won the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award at Harvard in 1987 and the Great Teacher Award at Columbia in 2003. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the board of trustees of the National Humanities Center and Oxford University Press, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Century Foundation. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and the University of Torino (Italy). Great textbook

I really enjoy this book! I had to buy it for my American history class which is online. The format of the class is where you wouldn't have to really read the book to pass but we needed the book to cite facts. I bought the book so I might as well read it. We just finished Chapter four and I really love the structure of the book. Most chapters are lonely 20 pages long and the book is filled with interesting pictures and diagrams. All of this makes it a great textbook! The only thing I don't like is some of the subheadings are like in the side of the paragraph so it's not real clear what your reading about but I see why they chose to do that based on design purposes.

Digital content, anyone?

I went to McGraw Hill trying to find some kind of digital content for this title for my daughter. Here is what I found. Basically, even if you want to hand them money, they will not take it. You can only get digital course material through the professor, and if he/she isn't doing it, you are SOL. I also went looking to see if anyone sold a PDF version of the book. All I found was a shady link on a filesharing website. Finally, I found something at CourseSmart where she can rent the book for 180 days... For $80! Crazy. An online, non-printed, non-physical book should not cost that much, especially a rental whose subject is freshman level. Of all the collegiate-level books I have encountered so far in the last couple of years, this may have the worst overall digital support. Dear McGraw Hill, if you are reading this, provide a way for students to independently obtain digital learning materials. Printed codexes are so 15th century.

If you could give no stars I would

So I teach from this book in high school. It is designed as an AP edition, but in truth it severely lacks the content necessary to both excite students and to even begin to pass the exam. It is true that it is abbreviated. It is much shorter than the American Pageant, which happens to be a very heavy but sturdy book for this subject, but in losing length, it has severely damaged the content and continuity of American history overall. Beyond the fact that it reads like eating plain shredded wheat with nothing to drink for hours, it actually has many completely false assertions. The one I can call out at the moment is a reference to Molly Pitcher in Chapter 5--she just doesn't exist, but for some reason Dr. Brinkley feels the need to toss her into the mix again. I think that the worst part of this book is that it claims to have teacher companion materials. It doesn't. Ok, it does for 5 chapters have an AP teachers guide, and at the 5th chapter it becomes the same as the college level themes listed in the Instructors Manual which is funny because people keep listing the strong AP correlation as the entire reason for adopting this book. The test questions are haphazardly written. It is pretty obvious as someone who has done graduate level work that Dr. Brinkley basically let his GAs write those questions. They lack direction. They are worded awkwardly, and they fail to come close to testing what would be important information from the chapter. The online materials are hard to access and largely redundant. Skip this one and go with something more standard.

REVISED REVIEW: Female domination (femdom) - a guide book

Chlo� Hornett makes what appears to be her debut in writing with this tasty little bit of naughty erotica. She knows her craft – and she knows her audience. But what is more than that she has a unique way of building a story line, introducing characters is a very clever and subtle manner so that you really don’t appreciate they are part of the ‘lesson plan’ of the title until she finished her novel with spunk.

In Erotica books he author either catches the attention in the first few paragraphs or falls victim to the fast scan search for the steam sections and forgetting about the story line. Chlo� dispels that flaw with a zinger of an opening paragraph: ‘A greasy hotel bar. Like most of its occupants, living off former glories - and finding itself overdrawn. But now Venecia walks into the room, and it changes. Becomes charged. The people in the room change too, like someone has released nerve gas into the air conditioning. I mean, she’s beautiful. And not in a delicate way. In a raw, firm, round, bouncy way. Conversations drop to a chatter, punctuated by the occasional clink of glasses. Then that self-consciously trails off too. The husbands in the room try not to notice her. The wives arch their eyebrows and share silent sympathies. It’s the same feeling you get when you’re pulling in at the supermarket and someone slips in next to you in a flashy car. You ignore it, but it’s a conscious decision. Intelligent, witty, and oh so very hot!

First of all, I was attracted to the title and cover of this book. It displayed just the right combination of eroticism, humor, and 1950s irony with a heavy wink toward the femdom genre.

Femdom novels can be problematic. When it’s nothing but wham-bam by the ma’am (natch!), it feels a little cartoony. When erotica utilizes a power exchange as its basis of eroticism, I prefer to have it presented in a way that is a little more human and nuanced. I like to be able to feel what is happening to the mind as well as the body.

This book certainly delivers on that front. Yes, Venecia Noir, the ultimate femme fatale who teaches young Sadie the joys of femdom, is a bit over the top (her name reminded me of the Latin phrase “veni, vidi, vici). But the way Sadie and her powerful millionaire boyfriend John navigate Venecia’s lessons expresses the type of sensual and emotional vulnerability, trust, and respect that is the heart of the femdom genre.

Along with the humanity and humor, this book has a ton of, well, sex! And it is truly hot and beautifully written. The physical imagery comes alive in the reader’s mind, but it is in the description of the emotional reactions where this erotica shines.

Highly recommended for those who like their femdom with loads of intelligence, wit, and heart.

Empowered By This Erotic Tale

Author Chloe Hornett brings erotica to brand new heights in How to Train A Man in Seven Easy Lessons. If your plan is to start out by reading the first few chapters, forget it. Spending time reading the day away (at least for me), is considered a luxury. Well I luxuriated anyway. Hornett's book is based on central character Sadie Ash who is oh so endearing, not in the kind of way that's memorable. This young woman just has so much living to do. It all changes on the day that she crosses paths with the very rich and successful John Domino. No spoiler, but what's to come will be downright titillating and every good-girl gone bad fantasy. Unexpected and erogenous, it's not just what Sadie learns about sex, the true shocker will be from who. Two thumbs up for a well written read that also promotes women empowerment.

His favorite course to teach is… “Calculus, because there are so many interesting applications that can be covered. Also, this is the course where students really start to see how the different areas of mathematics come together.”

William Navidi is Professor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the Colorado School of Mines. �He received the B.A. degree in mathematics from New College, the M.A. in mathematics from Michigan State University, and the Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley. �Professor Navidi has authored more than 50 research papers both in statistical theory and in a wide variety of applications including computer networks, epidemiology, molecular biology, chemical engineering, and geophysics.
