By Kindle Customer
When I saw that this author had a new story I couldn't wait to read it. This was a very good story with great characters and well described scenes. I hope there is a sequel with Cecily she could use her own bit of happiness. My only complaint was that this was really short. I really do enjoy this author.

A heart-wrenching tale of forbidden love

'A wonderfully complex love story unlike any you’ve read before. Saeed has given a novel that is both entertaining and important.”—Matt de la Peña, New York Times bestselling author

Naila’s conservative immigrant parents have always said the same thing: She may choose what to study, how to wear her hair, and what to be when she grows up—but they will choose her husband. Following their cultural tradition, they will plan an arranged marriage for her. And until then, dating—even friendship with a boy—is forbidden. When Naila breaks their rule by falling in love with Saif, her parents are livid. Convinced she has forgotten who she truly is, they travel to Pakistan to visit relatives and explore their roots. But Naila’s vacation turns into a nightmare when she learns that plans have changed—her parents have found her a husband and they want her to marry him, now! Despite her greatest efforts, Naila is aghast to find herself cut off from everything and everyone she once knew. Her only hope of escape is Saif . . . if he can find her before it’s too late.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Naila is a Pakistani American high school senior. As the story opens, her greatest trouble is the risk of going to the prom with her high school sweetheart against the wishes of her protective and conservative parents. She does anyway, her parents find out, and their reaction is swift and extreme: the family departs immediately for Pakistan and negotiates an arranged marriage for Naila. Her impassioned struggle against the constraints of an arranged marriage is contrived in places, but it is a compelling story nonetheless. This is a cross-cultural eye opener; since Naila had never left the US until she was 18, her first-person account resonates in its explanations of the rituals, especially how they would look and feel from an American point of view. Yet the setting is pure Pakistani, with culturally rich descriptions of Naila's extended family, their cuisine, and strongly held beliefs. The prose is simple and straightforward. Although the book's hallmark is not text complexity, the spare prose is more evocative than stilted: Saeed shows rather than tells, allowing readers to imagine how Naila must feel. There is some violence and sex, both appropriate to the context and the age of the protagonist. A good choice for libraries looking to diversify their shelves.—Amy Thurow, New Glarus School District, WI

Review
Praise for Written in the Stars

“Readers will be drawn into Naila’s trials and tribulations as she navigates the reality of her new life in Pakistan and explores what inner resources she needs to change her fate. . . . Sheds light on the difficult phenomenon of forced marriage, still prevalent in many cultures around the world and often shrouded in silence.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Movingly conveys the intense cultural pressure that motivates Naila’s parents and the heartbreaking betrayal Naila feels as she is deprived of her rights, cut off from the outside world, and threatened with shame and death. Saeed includes resources for those who, like Saif’s family, wish to help real-life Nailas, in this wrenching but hopeful story.”—Publishers Weekly

“Compelling. . . . This is a cross-cultural eye opener . . . Resonates in its explanations of the rituals, especially how they would look and feel from an American point of view. Yet the setting is pure Pakistani, with culturally rich descriptions of Naila’s extended family, their cuisine, and strongly held beliefs. . . . Evocative.”—School Library Journal

“Naila’s harrowing story is compellingly told. . . . Stirring, haunting, and ultimately hopeful.”—Booklist

“Saeed’s portrayal of a bicultural young woman is spot on in terms of both Naila’s expectations of eventual autonomy and her confusion over what is happening to her; she can’t imagine that her life is completely out of her own control. . . . An author’s note explains that while her own ‘semiarranged’ marriage was a success, she wrote the book to draw attention to the ‘silent epidemic’ of forced marriage; through Naila’s ordeal, readers will certainly have their eyes opened to how someone can be forced to marry against her will.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

This is a page-turner about love, culture, family—and the perilous journey into womanhood worldwide. I couldn’t put it down.”—Meg Medina, author of Pura Belpré Author Award winner Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass

“Written in the Stars is a wonderfully complex love story unlike any you’ve read before. Saeed has given a novel that is both entertaining and important.”—Matt de la Peña, author of Pura Belpré Author Honor winner The Living

Written in the Stars is a beautiful, touching
By Sara
I had the honor of meeting Aisha Saeed at the Decatur Book Festival before reading her book. Listening to her speak about Naila’s character and the story she was trying to tell before reading it for myself made the book that much more touching. I will admit I don’t know much about Naila’s culture so I’m not going to say I don’t agree with it. Her culture and beliefs are different than mine and that is perfectly okay. I will say it was interesting to learn about the culture from Naila’s point of view, hearing if from someone living it makes it easier to “see”.

Naila lives in America; and she has her entire life, but her family is still enforces their Pakistani beliefs. They live in a community with many other Pakistani families, have weekly get togethers, and still practice arranged marriage. Naila believes things will be different for her though, because her parents are allowing her to follow her dreams for college and medical school. When her parents catch her with an unapproved boy everything changes.

Naila’s parents plan a summer trip to Pakistan to visit relatives, to remind Naila of where she comes from, her beliefs, and how a Pakistani girl’s life should be. But the trip takes a turn that Naila did not see coming. How will she survive this change? Will her boy from home be able to help her or is her life doomed to her parent’s choice?

Written in the Stars is a beautiful, touching, unwrapped truth of a story. I learned more than I could have imagined from this story. From the culture to the language used I am beyond glad that this book exists. Everyone should read it at some point.

It makes you think
By Chubby Bookworm
I don't want to give any spoilers away but I will say this book quickly goes from "is this really happening" to absolutely terrifying pretty quickly. I know that this story is a work of fiction but the things Naila goes through are things that have more than likely happened to others. The story makes you stop and think about things we take for granted and don't appreciate. I'm so emotional thinking about it. I'm just a little speechless and sad thinking about the things many girls are forced into.

Written in the Stars is a beautiful eye opening novel for anyone who is ignorant in the subject of arranged marriages. I had heard of them before and knew the basics of what it was, but as a Hispanic it is not something I ever felt the need to really learn about. My favorite thing about reading has always been that it gives you the ability to see life through the eyes of someone who isn't you. Through this story, I was able to see life through the eyes of a scared 17 year old Pakistani-American girl facing a forced marriage.

"My mother always says when you fight destiny, destiny fights back. Some things, they're just written in the stars. You can try, but you can never escape what's meant to be." -Naila

Although Naila's parents are immigrants from Pakistan, she has only ever known life in Florida, USA. Living far away from their birth country has never stopped them from continuing to practice the same beliefs, religion, and culture. From the age of ten, Naila has been told that she can choose her career, her clothing, and the length of her hair, but who she will marry is not her decision to make. Her future husband will be chosen by her parents.

For a year now, Naila has been hiding her relationship with Saif who's family is also Pakistani. In this culture, one of the most important things is not doing anything to bring shame to your family's reputation. Unfortunately, Saif's family is looked down upon by the rest of the community and is therefor not someone her family would even consider. When Naila's parents find out of their relationship, they are determined that visiting their roots will change the way she feels.

Naila agrees to make the trip to Pakistan under the impression that they are there to visit family for the summer. What Naila doesn't know is that her parents are really trying to set up her arranged marriage! Now, she is in a completely different country that is run by a different set of rules. She knows what she wants is back in America, but leaving Pakistan seems impossible when her own family has turned on her.

"I know I will forget many details of this moment, but I will never forget the slap across my face. Or my chacha storming inside, my hands upon the cold concrete floor, the metallic taste of blood in my mouth..." -Naila

I don't think I've ever read a book that made me feel so helpless and angry! What upsets me the most is that Naila is such a good daughter. She is graduating salutatorian and has earned a scholarship into med school. Even with everything that is thrown at her, she doesn't want to bring dishonor and shame to her parents. I was obviously not raised in her culture, but a hard working and respectful 17 year old is just a rare gem these days and it made me angry that it wasn't enough for her parents. They cause her so much heartache and scars that will run deep psychologically.

"Maybe, I think, if I don't look up, if I simply look down and never look up again for the rest of my life, the feelings buried within will never rise to the surface." -Naila

Aisha Saeed, the author, made the chapters very short and it allowed the novel to feel fast paced without being rushed or important details being overlooked. I quickly fell in love with her writing style and ability to make a story flow. She leaves an author's note explaining how although Naila's story is fictional, arranged marriages are very real. Pakistan is only one country out of the many, including the United States, where forced marriages happen.

"It is my hope that this novel will provide a voice for so many girls who see themselves in Naila and who shouldn't have to suffer in silence." -Aisha Saeed

I really enjoyed getting to see the world through the eyes of a different culture! There were words used that I was not familiar with, such as kamiz and salwar, but I never felt lost. Using context clues made it easy to put things together. However, the author includes a glossary in case you need any help!

Coming Up Short: Working-Class Adulthood in an Age of Uncertainty, by Jennifer M. Silva

What does it mean to grow up today as working-class young adults? How does the economic and social instability left in the wake of neoliberalism shape their identities, their understandings of the American Dream, and their futures?

Coming Up Short illuminates the transition to adulthood for working-class men and women. Moving away from easy labels such as the "Peter Pan generation," Jennifer Silva reveals the far bleaker picture of how the erosion of traditional markers of adulthood-marriage, a steady job, a house of one's own-has changed what it means to grow up as part of the post-industrial working class. Based on one hundred interviews with working-class people in two towns-Lowell, Massachusetts, and Richmond, Virginia-Silva sheds light on their experience of heightened economic insecurity, deepening inequality, and uncertainty about marriage and family. Silva argues that, for these men and women, coming of age means coming to terms with the absence of choice. As possibilities and hope contract, moving into adulthood has been re-defined as a process of personal struggle-an adult is no longer someone with a small home and a reliable car, but someone who has faced and overcome personal demons to reconstruct a transformed self. Indeed, rather than turn to politics to restore the traditional working class, this generation builds meaning and dignity through the struggle to exorcise the demons of familial abuse, mental health problems, addiction, or betrayal in past relationships. This dramatic and largely unnoticed shift reduces becoming an adult to solitary suffering, self-blame, and an endless seeking for signs of progress.

This powerfully written book focuses on those who are most vulnerable-young, working-class people, including African-Americans, women, and single parents-and reveals what, in very real terms, the demise of the social safety net means to their fragile hold on the American Dream.

Review

"Impeccably researched and skillfully articulated, Silva's work is a timely primer on the current state of blue-collar Millennials." --Publishers Weekly

"In the tradition of Studs Terkel's Working and Lillian Rubin's Worlds of Pain, this poignant and powerful book takes us inside the lives of today's working class. With remarkable empathy and painful detail, Silva illuminates the personal stories of young workers with no unions, no pensions, no assets, and little hope for more than unstable low-wage jobs. Rather than blaming neoliberal capitalism for their precarious futures, she finds that these young people blame themselves. A smart and compelling page-turner, Coming Up Short is a truly masterful work." --Sharon Hays, author of Flat Broke with Children

"Capitalism and its devastating effects are best examined at the bottom of the social order, where men and women struggle with unemployment, with intimacy, and with forming self-respect. Coming Up Short studies working-class lives from a new perspective: that of the management of risk. It is a masterful contribution to our understanding of how capitalism creates the many anxieties that make up our lives." --Eva Illouz, Professor of Sociology, Hebrew University, Jerusalem

"This outstanding book offers a heartbreaking account of America's 21st century working class as they transition to adulthood. Dreaming of a life of college education, steady well-paying jobs, marriage, home-ownership, and children, they confront a reality of student loan debt, low-paying service sector jobs, unstable relationships, and a changed landscape of individual risk and self-blame. Silva's extraordinary ability to connect with these young people brings their perspectives to life, and her sharp analyses link their lives to wider social currents. Written with a rare combination of empathy and clear-eyed reasoning, Silva exemplifies sociology at its very best. This should be required reading for every young adult in America, and everyone who loves a young adult." --Mary Waters, M.E. Zukerman Professor of Sociology, Harvard University

"If you care about our country's future, ponder the compelling personal histories that Jennifer Silva portrays in this impressive book. Silva describes with grace and sensitivity how the economic and social changes that have rocked America in the last half century reverberate in the lives of young working class adults, radically isolated and striving to craft a sense of self in a world without security, without solidarity, and without trust. It is a chastening tale." --Robert D. Putnam, Professor of Public Policy, Harvard University, and author of Bowling Alone

"[A] brief yet devastating book that blends academic analysis and oral history to put a new face on well-documented trends that are more usually described in the abstract." --Boston Globe

"Silva has made a major contribution to understanding where young adults are coming from, what influences them, and what they consider to be common sense." --The American Conservative

"Fascinating" --Feministing.com

"[A]n enjoyable read and raises important issues that we generally overlook." --Washington Independent Review of Books

"Coming Up Short is a brief, but powerful, update of the status, difficulties, behaviors and distresses that characterize the lives of young working class adults. Based on in-depth interviews with 100 subjects, both White and African American, the book is -- among other things -- a reminder of the power of qualitative research, where the subjects' statements and the vignettes about them poignantly document a number of themes in a way that statistical tables could not... Coming Up Short is highly recommended for sociologists and social welfare students and academics alike. It informs in telling detail the difficult circumstances and self-perceptions of a significant portion of the American population. It is also a window into how the 'helping professions' have influenced the thinking of young adults and suggests that those professions need help their clients see their troubles in broader terms than they apparently currently do." --Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

"I enjoyed reading this book. It will stay in my memory long after it returns to my bookshelf, although I suspect it will not stay there long. For sociologists of youth and adulthood, like me, it contains many insights that spur the sociological imagination. But above all, the young working-class lives that Silva enables us to hear will continue to haunt me. They may be "coming up short" in an economic and social system that promises much, yet often delivers little, but to my mind and throughout Silva's book, they are adults with important messages to convey and lives to lead." --American Journal of Sociology

Struggling in the modern world
By Phil Terrana
One cannot help but be aware of the big problems facing this nation and the even bigger debate going on to find solutions to these problems. At the core of the struggle are those individuals and families trying to hold on to what they have acquired in the face of lost jobs and a collapsing housing market; and the 20 and 30-year olds trying to stake their place in the American economy.

In regard to the younger generation, "Coming Up Short" adds greatly to the debate by putting human faces on the problem. The people Jennifer Silva interviewed face a myriad of problems--some the result of their doings and some through no fault of their own. What they all seem to share is a belief that they must endure these struggles alone.

They have lost faith in the idea of a common struggle because time and again society (whether it be the job market, education, the military, the government or even their own families) has let them down. They have chosen to go it alone because they think it is their only choice. Their parent and grandparents grew up in societies with more effective safety nets and took advantage of them.

The people Silva interviews are not lazy, ignorant, or unmotivated. In overcoming their own demons, they demonstrate personal strengths that have throughout our history been the cornerstone to our success.

What holds them back is a thirty-year movement that seems to push the idea that successful people do it on their own. For 30 years we have worried about investors and have let workers fall by the wayside. Those already in the workforce during this period have, by making adjustments, been able to survive this assault although they won't come away unscathed. This book, on a very personal level, demonstrates what those trying to get into the game are going up against.

As a nation we must stop looking at issues of living wages, deregulation, universal health care, student loans, and a whole host of others from a strictly cost effective point of view. Jennifer Silva drives home very well the point that there are real people at the heart of all these issues.

Not an easy read, or as well organized as I would have wished, however, ...
By David Ecale
This is an important book to read. It explains (in a somewhat disorganized way) why the children who are & have recently come of age since 2000 (the Millennials) have had such a rough time. In effect, they have mostly tried to ride up on the coattails of the Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) successes & have been stomped on by the changing society & reduction in opportunities in today's world of work. My take:

1) College: It used to be a ticket to a better life. Many companies still require a college degree of some type to be promoted above entry level jobs. The problem is that when my father graduated, about 6% of the workforce had graduated from college, when I graduated, it was about 25%. Today it is trending much higher & as a consequence, a college degree's value is greatly discounted. Add to this, college financial aid really isn't as it places an unsustainable financial burden on those who can least afford to pay.

2) Debt (both college & other): This problem is exacerbated by the fact that due to prior abuses, congress has removed student debt from the classes of debt that can be discharged in a bankruptcy. Thus the quote from the book, "...that mean old lady, Sally Mae..." rings as true as the albatross that was hung around the Ancient Mariner's neck. It is a cross that must be born without relief, except in extreme circumstances, or death. The rest of the debts also overwhelm today's Millennials.

3) Perpetual childhood: Unlike those of my generation, who were forced to go to war & had a chance to still find a decent job afterwords, today's Millennials are stuck with a declining economy and few good paying jobs. (No matter what the government's economists say, this economy is still declining, just like it did in the '30s when the government's economists denied the protracted extension of the depression.) They are also afflicted with an ambivalence that for lack of a better term, I'd call victim-hood.

Finally, the hollowing out of the paths to upward mobility are having a devastating effect on them. Do all the right things & the paths to upward mobility are still closed out to them. The classic middle class jobs: manager, union journeyman, highly skilled technician, are all being reduced or are being shipped overseas.

She summarizes with some ideas & polemics that may help, but in the end, I believe that she is still puzzled about how we can pull our society out of this malaise.

A personal note: These folks are our children. If they can't attain a good adulthood, I fear that us older folks will suffer a reduced retirement as we are forced to support them way into their 30s & 40s. A time when we ourselves would need their support! Finally, an example of how ugly things are, think of this: Watch TV. Just look at the number of Reverse Mortgage ads that are out there. We, as the older generation, are given the opportunity to leave our children & grand-children, not the family house, but the requirement to move out all of our junk (at their cost) when we kick the bucket!

Beautifully-written, fresh, and important read about working-class youth
By M
This is -- without a doubt -- the most convincing account of young adults I've ever read. I've always felt the discussions in the media about the "lazy" Millennial generation were overly general and implicitly classist. Silva's research finally gives a voice to this often overlooked segment of young adults. It's no wonder these young adults delay romance, distrust their communities, and have so little going for them. Make sure to read the chapter on the mood economy -- a fresh and interesting take on emotions! This is a timely, beautifully-written, and important read.

nice introductory book
By Michael R. Chernick
When I was a graduate student at Stanford in the mid 1970s I took my first course in stochastic processes out of the companion book on stochastic processes by these authors. The three volumes "Introduction to Probability", "Introduction to Statistics" and "Introduction to Stochastic Processes" were produced at about the same time with the intention of covering the first three graduate courses on these subjects in a statistics porgram. I had different texts for my probabilty and statistics courses but these three texts were excellent and very similar in style. They are all clear and concise and could be best studied in the order given above.

Clear and concise
By Ralph Wojtowicz
To prepare for my first semester teaching statistics, I asked several colleagues for advice and references. Texts by Brunk and DeGroot were very useful and helped me organize and clarify for my students the material in our "statistics for engineers" text. Recently I discovered the three wonderful volumes by Hoel, Port, and Stone. In particular I found nice pictures to illustrate and explain the central limit theorem. There are also many exercises and worked examples. The next statistics course I teach will be greatly improved thanks to these books and the work that went into writing them.

I am stunned that the publisher has turned this isnt a 140 dollar new text.
By J. Rounds
I used this book as an undergraduate. Its a good text in the sense that it cuts to the chase... but its not that good and its short. 140 dollars for a new version of this text is the publisher milking the textbook industry. If you at all have an option buy old edition of something else or something. [Casella, Statistical Inference comes to mind]

There is nothing modern or comprehensive or unusually easy to understand in this text. Note that this text has not changed sinced 1971. Not a word. So there are many old editions of many old text that cover the same material. It does what it does decent... I am glad to own it. But it doesnt do it 140 dollars worth. And wasnt 140 dollars for a new version until recently.

Civil War Hospital Sketches, by Louisa May Alcott

Before her wider fame as the author of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott achieved recognition for her accounts of her work as a volunteer nurse in an army hospital. Written during the winter of 1862–63, her lively dispatches appeared in the newspaper Commonwealth, where they were eagerly read by soldiers' friends and families. Then, as now, these chronicles revealed the desperate realities of battlefield medicine as well as the tentative first steps of women in military service.
Writing under a pseudonym, Alcott recounted the vicissitudes of her two-day journey from her home in Concord, Massachusetts, to Washington, D.C. A fiery baptism in the practice of nursing awaited her at Washington Hospital, were she arrived immediately after the slaughter of the Army of the Potomac at the battle of Fredericksburg. Alcott's rapidly paced prose graphically depicts the facts of hospital life, deftly balancing pathos with gentle humor. A vivid and truthful portrait of an often overlooked aspect of the Civil War, this book remains among the most illuminating reports of the era's medical practices as well as a moving testimonial to the war's human cost.

Another Civil War book to read, interested in not only the Civil War but in how the wounded were cared for since my 3rd great grandfather died in a military hospital during the Civil War. So this will add to my genealogical and historical knowledge of the event of the time.

No question this is Louisa May Alcott
By M. Heiss
These are dispatches home from Jo -- no doubt about who could have written these.

They are interesting in the sense of a young person's first impressions of illness, injury, death, and war. Not to mention, life in the south through the eyes of a Bostoner. Very few letters -- she didn't last long before a fever got her -- but very interesting. The gentlemanly behavior described, the ladylike behavior -- all of it in Jo's style of writing. Great!

Civil War Hospital Sketches
By Renee Lamb
This book was short and gave some insight, but was a little disappointing since I had just finished reading Civil War Nurse: The Diary and Letters of Hannah Ropes. Both Louisa May Alcott and Hannah Ropes were assigned to the same hospital. Hannah Ropes' book is more in depth with the day-to-day details and her feelings than Hospital Sketches. Louisa May Alcott's book makes you think it was written specifically for a certain reading audience in mind and was found lacking in some respects.
