About the Author
Bradley Levinson is Professor of Education at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Jacob P. K. Gross, Ph.D. in history, philosophy, and policy studies in education, with a concentration in higher education, from Indiana University, is a policy and planning research analyst with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. He also collaborates with the Project on Academic Success at Indiana University on several projects, leading the project on student flow.

Christopher Hanks, Ph.D. in philosophy of education at Indiana University, is assistant professor of education at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. His work focuses on epistemology, theories of the mind, education as cultivation of the self, and cosmopolitan education, and he has published in the journal Educational Theory and Philosophy of Education, the annual volume of the Philosophy of Education Society.

Julia Heimer Dadds, Ph.D. candidate in curriculum studies at Indiana University, has a lifetime of nonprofit work with children and families in poverty, people with disabilities, and the elderly, including seven years as a Head Start program director. She currently works as a board member for Community Justice and Mediation and for the Youth Services Bureau of Bloomington, Indiana.

Kafi Kumasi, Ph.D. in curriculum studies from Indiana University, is an assistant professor of library and information science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Her teaching and research interests center on school library media issues, particularly critical and sociocultural approaches to adolescent literacy education and library services.

Joseph Link is studying for the Ph.D. in the history of education at Indiana University. For many years he has directed a nonprofit program for disability services and taught at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dini Metro-Roland, Ph.D. in curriculum studies and philosophy of education at Indiana University, is assistant professor of educational foundations at Western Michigan University. If you love real crime stories this is a book you should check out. I found most of the material interesting and fun to read.

I have many of these “Mammoth book” book series over the years and I just finished reading this (The Mammoth book of Perfect Crimes and Impossible Mysteries edited by Mike Ashley) amazing volume. This giant 530 page paperback has 30 stories and I found most of them were well written and very interesting.

As someone who has worked in the investigative field for 29 years I found myself caught up in many of these mysteries and crimes. Each story was written by a different writer, which makes for a nice variety of weaving a crime tale. A few of the 30 stories in this collection includes the following:

An almost perfect crime, the X street murders, locked in death, duel of shadows, 45 steps, contrary to evidence, the impossible footprint, death and the rope trick, a shower of daggers, the hook, observable justice, on the rocks, no killer has wings, the Stuart sapphire, proof of guilt and 15 other crime and mystery tales.

If you like unique mysteries and crime stories you should check out this book. You can pick a copy up for a bargain price on Amazon. I found this book to be a fun read.

Locked rooms, impossible crimes, and perfect murders

Editor Mike Ashley has assembled more than 500 pages' worth of short mystery fiction focusing on locked room murders, impossible crimes, and even perfect murders -- ranging from one story originally published as early as 1910 to several that were previously unpublished when the book came out in 2007. Included are 30 audacious murder scenarios: A man alone in a phone booth is somehow stabbed in the back with an icepick; a man alone in a room is shot by a bullet fired over 200 years ago; a man enters a cable-car alone and is dead when it reaches the bottom; a man receives mail in response to letters apparently written by him--after his death; a lion tamer is found strangled in a locked train car; an Indian rope trick performer vanishes at the end of the trick only to be found dead in a nearby lake; three women are found murdered, their bodies seemingly untouched yet with their internal organs removed.

Sometimes the reader knows the killer, watching to see whether he can beat the investigators; sometimes the story is a whodunit, where everyone is a suspect; and sometimes the crime is such a head-scratcher that one can only turn the pages hoping to figure out what in the world happened. Along the way, the editor calls on such familiar authors as Edward D. Hoch, Bill Pronzini, and J.A. Konrath, while also digging up a healthy assortment of lost classics. (Ashley avoids any examples from John Dickson Carr and G.K. Chesterton, two masters of the form, because those authors' stories are often so readily available.)

Some of the stories are great, some are okay, and one or two make you slap your forehead in amazement. Overall, a fine collection for any fan of puzzle mysteries.

Plot/Storyline: 4.75 stars
Ashley is arguably one of the best anthologists currently working, and this collection can only bolster his reputation. With a single exception, each story is tightly written and proceeds to a logical if unforeseen ending. The plots move right along and the reader is given the information to deduce the explanation - but I bet you don't, any more than I could. The sole exception was "The Poisoned Bowl" by Forrest Rosaire, in which the author pulled a "with this clue that I'm not going to share with the reader, she knew whodunit" which is the unforgivable sin of mysteries. This solid collection is nicely-formatted with an active TOC and a great choice for the locked-room fan.

Characters: 4.5 stars
There isn't room in a short story to develop characters as much as would be expected in a novel, but the major characters were mostly believable and usually likable. "The Poisoned Bowl" featured a stereotypical inscrutable-but-evil Chinese, but considering when it was written, the character was common for the time. The villains were often gone by the time the story started, so were not discussed much.

Writing style: 5 stars
Sentence structure was fine. Dialogue was believable and often used to disguise clues. Descriptions were often concise rather than vivid, simply describing a house as "impressive" rather than providing the details so the reader applies the label, but again this is not unusual in short stories and I did not find it irritating.

About the Author
Professor Tariq Muneer, BEng(Hons), MSc, PhD, DSc, CEng, MIMechE, FCIBSE, Millennium Fellow is currently Professor in Energy Engineering at Napier University, Edinburgh. Professor Muneer has been engaged in research work related to understanding the physics of terrestrial solar radiation. Undertaken in four continents across the world, the results of his 25 years of painstaking work are now being used as the basis for all slope energy calculations across the European Union and the United Kingdom. The work has been published in over a hundred technical articles and three major research monographs. Professor Muneer has contributed very widely towards the development of science and technology of energy systems. At Napier University he chairs a large research programme on the measurement and utilisation of solar energy. Professor Muneer is an international authority on solar radiation, daylight illuminance modelling, and solar energy utilisation. He is chairman of the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers' (London) solar data task group, and in this capacity he has been involved in the production of the CIBSE Guide J for weather and solar data. Professor Muneer has written 5 books and over 140 articles. His awards include the Royal Academy of Engineering ESO, Leverhulme Trust and University College, Oxford/General Electric Company research fellowships, Osmania University's Karamet Jung Gold Medal, and the CIBSE Carter and Napier Shaw Bronze Medals, and the Society for Light & Lighting's Best Article Award. To date Professor Muneer has successfully produced 12 PhD and 3 MPhil graduates with a further 6 supervisees awaiting their doctoral completions.

Profitably Tapping into Millions in Start-Up Funds

Do you have a business idea that's so big that you'll need millions of dollars just to get started? If so, Keys to the Vault will add great value to your search for those funds while also helping you make your business more successful.

Keith J. Cunningham has clearly been there and done that when it comes to financing start-up enterprises. His advice, examples, and war stories resonate with my 35 plus years of experience in working with successful start-up companies. Most entrepreneurs would be lucky to find someone with his Mr. Cunningham's experience and smarts. Now, for just the price of this book, you can gain from his solid advice.

While the nuances of Mr. Cunningham's advice are quite complex, the key principles are quite simple. The book opens with the example of how Mr. Cunningham started a successful egg delivery business as a youngster and goes on to next spell out what he calls "The Universal Formula for Success" which I've simplified as follows:

1. Find out what potential customers want.
2. Assemble an organization and resources to feed that want.
3. Operate the organization to serve the need.

From there, he identifies six keys to going from having a business idea to being in business. I've rephrased those keys into the following:

1. Understand how potential investors will think about your idea.
2. Develop the best business plan you can.
3. Assemble a credible business team that will do a great job of implementing the plan.
4. Select the right legal and financial structure.
5. Raise money from investors.
6. Take the right risks and adjust your actions based on learning from your mistakes.

The book is then divided into six parts which explore and explain these keys.

The back matter includes helpful material like sources for raising money, business plan resources, a sample executive summary of a business plan, a description of how a professional investor evaluates your plan, a glossary of terms, and a reference to his Web site for more resources.

I thought that the most useful part of the book came in the part concerning how to raise money. Mr. Cunningham does a good job of warning entrepreneurs not to over value their enterprise and to be realistic in negotiating: The first offer you get may be the only offer you receive.

The next most useful part is in explaining how a professional investor looks at a business plan.

The writing is easy to follow and the stories are compelling. I think you'll find yourself having a hard time putting the book down.

What are the less valuable parts of the book?

Considering that there will be tens of thousands of businesses launched without a need for major capital for every one that will need lots of money, I thought the discussion of how to bootstrap a business start-up without much capital was thin. Most strong business start-ups can raise much of the money they need through customer advances and outsourcing to capable organizations. In fact, that's the main reason to have a great business plan: You'll probably find ways to avoid needing as much capital as you might otherwise have used. Did you know that Michael Dell didn't raise any substantial external capital until just a few months before he took his company public? That's what a great business model and plan can do for you.

I also thought that the business plan discussion could have been developed in more detail. I would have liked to see this section explain more about how you gain the knowledge and perspective to create a terrific business plan. Most start-up leaders I meet have never developed a business plan before and certainly haven't seen a good one. As a result, they don't know where to begin . . . even when someone gives them a color-by-numbers outline of what should be in the plan.

If, however, you are an industry heavyweight with a solid start-up concept but don't know much about raising substantial amounts of equity, Keys to the Vault will be an excellent introduction to that subject.

If you don't need very much capital, much of this book's good advice will be wasted for you.

Keys to Success

Opening with the foreword written by Anthony Robbins, possibly the world's most renowned peak performance leader, "Keys to the Vault" kicks off with an exciting feel of opportunity, entrepreneurship, and overall success. Robbins explains how you can benefit from someone else's trial and error and create a fast path to the same type of success if only those distinctions are made available. Keith Cunningham seeks to provide that level of distinction in his valuable words that fill this book.

As Cunningham makes clear, desire and drive are not enough to springboard you into your own business. He brings the reader his insight and learnings based upon his 35 years of experience in the world of business. Spawned from that experience, he presents his 6 keys to success that will take your idea from being just a mere thought, to being a full blown successful reality.

The six keys, introduced and succinctly summarized in chapter 2, are:
1. Think like an investor
2. Research and prepare a great business plan
3. Attract a team that's smarter than you are
4. Get the correct business and capitalization structure
5. Sell the deal to the investor
6. Take risks and rebound from mistakes

So now you have the six keys, I've given it all away... not quite. This book gets it's magic from the pages that follow. The book contains critical information that further defines each of the keys. For example, Cunningham defines the different types of investors and helps us to better understand what exactly the professionals are looking for and how to best present your idea to them.

The second key explains the importance of a business plan, the questions to ask yourself in order to attract investors. This chapter also has the feel of moving you out of the "dream" stage and into the "reality" stage.

Attracting a Team that is Smarter than You. This section clearly illustrates the importance of a great team and why your brother-in-law or high school buddy might not be the best fit for a business partner.

The book follows with chapters delivering gems as the six keys unfold and the experience of professionals awaken in front of you. Additionally, the appendixes offer additional readings and websites to further advance your opportunities.

Consider this your business advisor, at least one of your advisors on your quest for your dream. Owning a business doesn't have to be a dream, it can be a reality. Just prepare yourself, educate yourself, and use the drive and determination you have within to make it a success. As the title suggests, the money is out there, you just need to know how to create a compelling plan and ask for it.

If You Are New To Running a Business... You MUST Have this...

Tony Robbins didn't pick this guy to coach his Wealth Mastery seminar for nothing. Reading this book has given me a game plan for how to ensure my business can succeed without sounding all stuffy and boring like a text book.

This guy seriously has the goods and if your looking to raise money for your company or are just new to running your business... you MUST have this guide.

It will shave years off of your learning curve and save you loads of grief.
