About the Author

Hedwig Lewis is an educationist and writer and has served as a lecturer and principal. He received the Rev T. A. Mathias Award for Innovative College Teachers from All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE), New Delhi, in 1993. He has authored 30 books and his publications are on wide-ranging subjects that fall under several categories: spirituality, prayer, skill-building, biographies, inspirational, history, festive, and e-book. Some of his most noticeable works are At Home With God (1991), Happiness Manufacturers (2001), Mirrors of Life (1998), Once Upon A Time (2010), Fun With Words (1983), and Gujarat Jesuits Remembered (2002). Several of his books have been translated into Spanish and Lithuanian; some have been translated into different regional languages, including the previous edition of Body Language, which was translated into Malayalam. Father Lewis is a Jesuit priest and can be reached at St Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad (Gujarat, India).

Solid Foundation

I really found this book to be an interesting read, as it says, it covers a lot of the basic computer science principles.

As can be expected from a book that covers such a vast number of topics, it doesn't go into all of them in detail, although a few of them seemed to be quite in-depth.

I didn't have a problem with the actual quality of the book(unlike another reviewer), though I definitely think some of the examples could be clearer.

I have a good opinion of this book, I think its quite suitable as a university textbook, which is the purpose for which it was written. But I would definitely recommend it for programmers who maybe haven't done any university courses, a book like this will give insight into how things work behind the scene.

No Quality Assurance

This book shows a lot of detailed process, while doing a poor job of explaining it. The first 50 pages of the book have wrong examples on multiple occasions and obvious grammatical errors. There must have been very little quality assurance performed by the publisher of this book. This is sub-standard to use for college level computer science courses. If I were a professor, I would never use a book that shows wrong examples. This is very, very poor workmanship.

This book needs to be edited properly. The language is awful. As an academic textbook at tertiary level, bad language is unacceptable.

About the Author
Michael Sugich is a native of Santa Barbara, California and studied at UCLA and the California Institute of the Arts. He was initiated into a traditional Sufi order in 1972. Since that time he has studied Sufi doctrine and practice with spiritual masters across the Arab and Islamic world. He lived for 23 years in the precincts of the sacred city of Makkah Al Mukaramah where he kept company with many men of knowledge and illumination. He has written Palaces of India (Pavilion Books), a travel book, and Living in Makkah (Macdonald Publishers), a children's book, and, most recently a feature documentary film on the life of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Faisal: Legacy of a King.

It's nice to hear interesting stories about modern dedicated Muslims that you thought existed, as well as some more famous ones. From each can you derive a quality.

It reminds me of "The Sufis of Andalusia: The Ruh al-quds and al-Durrat al-Fakhirah" by Ibn 'Arabi. It would be nice to see even more of this sort of stuff.

Spring's Awakening is a tragi-comedy of teenage sex. Its fourteen-year-old heroine, Wendla, is killed by abortion pills. The young Moritz, terrorized by the world around him, and especially by his teachers, shoots himself. The ending seems likely to be the suicide of Moritz's friend, Melchior, but in a confrontation with a mysterious stranger (the famous Masked Man) he finally manages to shed his illusions and face the consequences.

About the Author
Frank Wedekind (1864-1918) was born in Hanover. He became a journalist and later secretary of a circus before forming his own theatrical company and producing and acting in his own plays. "Fruhlings Erwachen" ("Spring Awakening") was written in 1891 and like all his plays aroused great controversy for its sexual outspokenness. It is perhaps his best known work.

Ahead of its time

So quickly does amnesia set in with age!
One generation is barely finished acting out the final throes of its rebellion before it turns to condemn the morals and values of the generation which follows. We see this today, of course, but it is nothing new, as Wedekind's play - written a century ago - brings to light with a startling clarity.
Abandoning any pretence of objectivity or realism, Wedekind's A Spring Awakening tells the timeless story of one generation's struggle to come to grips with the emotional and physical changes of adolescence, in the context of the earlier generation's social and sexual mores. As Wedekind makes very clear, it is not the natural impulses of youth that are corrupting, but rather the attempts of the adults to control these impulses by layering them with guilt.
Wedekind's exploration of these themes, while decidedly (and intentionally) one-sided, is a beautifully crafted piece of expressionist theatre. After seeing this play performed, I found myself thinking of it for days; after reading the script, further layers of both meaning and ambiguity came to the fore.

Spring Awakening is an indepth look at teen life.Brilliant!

Recently observing an adapted performance of Spring Awakening I was stunned at the confronting and amazingly written script of Frank Wedekind. Although written over one hundred years ago the issues involved are still plaguing the children of todays generation. The play is interesting and easily related to by teenage children aswell as older audiences. I thoroughly enjoyed myself while watching the play along with all my companions

A rude awakening

There has been renewed interest in Wedekind's most famous play, following the Broadway musical adaptation of it (currently on tour) achieving some success. Also keeping this 1891 play in print is the fact that it is a favorite text for University German courses. It certainly is a milestone in German theater, anticipating the Expressionist movement by a few years and shaking up audiences then and now and, given the explicit sexual acts called for by the script, it can in more than one sense be described as a 'seminal' work.

The play satirizes the sexually oppressive society of fin de si�cle Germany, in a straightforwardly polemical, full-frontal manner. It is, to put it mildly, a challenge to anyone wanting to stage it with any fidelity to the script. That's one reason why it's worth reading, rather than just seeking out an actual performance. You'll find the musical adaptation, for instance, a good deal different from the original text.

The many Biblical and Classical references in the play will be lost on most modern audiences, although they would have been familiar to contemporary audiences and authentically part of the education of the characters portrayed. Today, we need editorial help and Eric Bentley provides this. Those footnotes and the translation itself are fine. I am less happy with the 'Ten Notes' that Bentley provides as an introduction. They are rather self indulgent and include 3 pages of very poor verse, for which I assume Bentley is responsible. So if you want to delve deeper into the historical context and cultural significance of the play, you will need to supplement this text with other critiques. Fortunately, there are many available online.
