Darker Than the Deepest Sea: The Search for Nick Drake, by Trevor Dann

When Nick Drake (1948-1974) died of a drug overdose at twenty-six, he left behind three modest-selling albums, including the stark Pink Moon and the lush Bryter Layter. Three decades later, he is recognized as one of the true geniuses of English acoustic music. Yet Nick Drake--whose music was as gentle and melancholy as the man himself-- has always maintained a spectral presence in popular music. This groundbreaking biography reconstructs a vanished life while perfectly capturing the bohemian scenes surrounding the music business in London in the late '60s and early '70s. Using many newly discovered documents and all-new interviews, Trevor Dann reveals more detail on Nick Drake than ever, from his upbringing in a quintessentially English village, through his hash-fueled school days at Cambridge University, to the missed opportunities and mismanagement that defined his career. Friends and colleagues describe the difficulties that he faced as each new album was released, only to fail, and the insidious despair that consumed him. Complete with discography and rare photos, Darker Than the Deepest Sea is essential reading for anyone who has been moved by Nick Drake's unforgettable blend of beauty and sadness.

From Publishers Weekly
A British acoustic-psychedelic entry into the ever-swelling hall of artists who died young, Nick Drake received little recognition during his short life. Yet more than 30 years after his death, his celebrity has never been greater and has been accompanied by reissues, documentary films and biographies—one Drake tune even rated a Volkswagen commercial. Born to a wealthy family, Drake showed early interest in music; by his university years he had developed a unique guitar style and brooding songs that had little to do with the hippie noodlings of the era. Heavy drug use and commercial failure pushed the already introverted Drake deeper into isolation and despair; he died of an overdose at the age of 26. To this day, questions swirl around every aspect of Drake's life, from his musical influences and sexuality to whether or not he intentionally killed himself. Unfortunately, Dann, producer of Live Aid, brings little insight to the Drake mysteries. While he covers Drake's Cambridge years thoroughly, other aspects of the musician's life are barely mentioned; even interviews with Drake's closer friends reveal little—it just might be that no one really ever got close enough to him. By contrast, the book's discography is comprehensive and informative. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Nick Drake, the English songwriter who has come to personify the young, sensitive, gloomy, and doomed composer of navel--gazing songs, released only three albums and 31 tracks of music before his fatal overdose in 1974 (he was 26). Ignored in his own time, his music gradually obtained a wider audience and a measure of popular acceptance. Dann sets out to reveal the person behind the virtuoso guitar playing and soft English lilt in this new biography. The problem is, his subject was elusive to those who knew him and remains so to his biographer. Nobody really knew Drake well, not even his friends. Too often Dann compensates by focusing on trivia (for instance, directions to Drake's Cambridge dormitory). By the end, we know things about Drake, but we don't know the man. Funny, then, how affected readers are by the loss when they arrive at the point of his death. Somehow, Dann captures enough of the shadow that was Drake that we care when the light is extinguished and the shadow lost. Given Drake's fierce reserve, this is no small accomplishment. Jerry Eberle

Fitting a tallish musician into the Procrustean bed du jour
By endofempire
The recent death of Beastie Boys founding member John Berry from frontotemporal dementia is an important reminder that creative musicians can and do suffer from seriously impairing neurological conditions other than schizophrenia. It is unfortunate that the writer of this book is so blindly fixed on the patented tragic drug causality narrative which Sid Barrett fans have grown so very, very tired of over the years. The fact is, Nick could've had virtually anything - post concussive dementia (serious car accident), leishmaniasis (grew up in the tropics), temporal lobe epilepsy (like equally troubled genius Brian Jones) or even "just" a garden variety case of treatment resistant depression,a condition which, even with today's modern medical interventions, is quite terrible enough without playing a sick game of lets blame the victim for his recreational drug use. The drug use/schizophrenia theory is one this author never ceases harping on, coming across as both insensitive to Nick's suffering and snidely superior for somehow "knowing" exactly what the poor deluded artist needed to do and not do based on a one narrow prudish view. Even presuming the schizophrenia hypothesis is correct, The author's nannyish bias is clearly demonstrated by his failure to discuss or explore the other causative factors for the disease which impacted Drake's life. For example, in Dr. Robin Murray's seminal work on the the subject, which first examined the causal link between cannabis use and an earlier onset of schizophrenia symptoms, there is also a wealth of material on the significant influence immigration has on the onset of the condition. To avoid the slightest whisper that might conflict with his thesis, our author rather disingenuously restricts Murray's contribution to a heavily edited soundbite from the popular press. Despite having another crystal clear contemporary example of failure to adapt to English life after returning from overseas (that charmingly disinhibited alcoholic Bornean "Bugger in the short sleeves", Kevin Ayers) once the author has established his narrow personal fantasy of Nick the he promptly abandons science in favor of demeaning his subject for for having a bad smelling bed. Between that and the exact directions to Nick's dorm room and a wrenching final description of his underwear, the writer comes across as less of a serious biographer and more of the kind of creepy possessive stalker who ends up in Thom Yorke's back yard. One of many, many disappointments of this shallow book is the lack of investigation into the influence that the Karen language and cultural mores of Nick's childhood caregivers may have had on the selection of words and their emphasis in his compositions, as well possibly contributing to his shyness and inability to put himself forward in social situations. Rock bios have a history of being uneven and this one is no exception. It would help if biographer had some respect for his subject.

The subtleties are amazing. His tunnings
By Andrew E Berry
There seems to be quite a Nick Drake following. To be honest, I did not know of him until "discovering" him in a recent article in "Acoustic Guitar Player". Having grown up in the 60's and being a guitar player myself, I was puzzled by never having heard of Nick. First, I listened to some of his music on line. Wow. The subtleties are amazing. His tunnings, timing, lyrics, all catch you. I wanted to learn more about, this gifted musician I knew nothing about. The way this book is written, it made me wonder if it was written as a college thesis ? That being said, it was an easy, fun read. It was neat to see the pictures of Nick, family, and life. I bought a used copy from Amazon, which was in new condition. Here I am at my age having played guitar since Nick's era, sharing this book with my guitar teacher, who wants to give it read. Considering the time frame Nick was alive, there are interesting bits about other musicians from that era, that were early in their careers that Nick crossed paths with in various ways. I would recommend this book.

Good read about a great talent, yet lost soul
By Keltic
I enjoyed this book in the same way as I did Into The Wild and Finding Everett Ruess. Wanderers lost in their owns minds and realities. As a musician myself I can directly relate to a lot of what he was dealing within terms of direction and the challenge of how to best share his creative efforts. It actually choked me up several times in places as I felt for his depression related struggles and lack of balance between his commanding technical abilities and poor social skills. I've read a ton of music biographies and Nick's is one of the more moving and mysterious out there.
