Dr. Larry Markson, personal empowerment, practice and business success and prosperity coach, has devoted his professional life to helping others transform their thoughts, actions, and feelings to experience the fulfillment of their life's goals. For nineteen years, Larry was a practicing doctor of chiropractic with an extremely successful facility in Flushing, New York. In 1980 he founded Markson Management Services, a strategy-based practice management and coaching firm for chiropractors. In 1997, he co-founded The Masters Circle with Drs. I quit my "stinkin thinkin"

I must say that for a good part of my life I spoke negatively about myself and wondered why I had such a low self esteem. This book helped me realize that I had to change my thinking to improve my life. This book is a must for anyone who struggles with "stinkin thinkin" and wants true change in their life.

Dr.Markson does an outstanding job of building on the concept of taking control of your thoughts, and more importantly, taking control of your beliefs. He provides great insight and ideas into self talk for a better future.

I can't believe I paid for this

This book is a very long ad for the author's workshop.

It's full of silly, trite, power-of-positive-thinking flotsam. If you've ever read a self-help book before, nothing here will be new to you. It's entirely conceptual stuff, with very little guidance on how to actually put any of the ideas to use. If you want the same kind of content but with an actual program to apply the ideas, try Terry McBride's The Hell I Can't. He's also has a much more interesting story than Markson.

Now thats what I call a GREAT read!!!

E Lynn Harris has once again knocked me out with his work! "Basketball Jones" was so good it was hard for me to put it down, and I was sad when I reached the ending!!
Aldridge "AJ" Richardson and Drayton "Dray" Jones have been secret lovers since AJ tutored Dray in Algebra back in college. Dray goes on to have a successful NBA career and AJ is still in his life, as a secret of course. Dray can't imagine his family or teammates finding out he is gay. So AJ goes along with keeping the relationship a secret, even when Dray takes a wife to quiet questions about his relationship with AJ. Aj deals with it becasue he loves Dray and Dray takes very good care of AJ financially. AJ happily follows Dray around the country just to make his "man" happy.
Unfortunately, there is someone who knows about AJ and Dray and they will stop at nothing to either get paid or expose the sordid affair of a married NBA star and his gay lover.
This book is 100 % a must read and a compelling story about love and how far someone will go to keep secrets.

I bought Basketball Jones around 5pm the day it came out and finished the book that night. I could not put it down! Basketball Jones is definitely a must read!! E Lynn is such an amazing author and captures the reader from start to finish. Basketball Jones is an intense story of two men in a relationship with many twist and turns

I love how E Lynn novels are the perfect mixture of classy with a raw touch and Basketball Jones is just that. Trust me, this is well worth the money and you WILL NOT be disappointed!! Good Job E Lynn!!

The things we do for love

Basketball Jones was a great read. Loved the two main characters. I was drawn into their complex relationship. AJ had to make some great sacrifices, some would say he was well compensated. But you can't curl up next to that "money" at night. I did not like how he handled Miss Judi... she would have had to feel the "wrath" at least a little. He let her off too easy. Otherwise I loved the book, I hope AJ finds love in a sequel.

Fluff without much meat

I checked this book out from the library to see if it would be a good reference book for kids that are interested in learning how to use/program EV3 Robots. The first 100 pages (of ~350 pages) are dedicated to talking about what's in the box, comparing EV3 and NXT, and building your first bots. However, there isn't one single instruction on how to program or build an actual bot (even though there are 20 pages dedicated to building your first bots!)! It isn't until about page 150 (almost halfway through the book!) that you start learning how to program something. 150 pages to slog through before you start learning how to program something. The book directs you to a website for instructions on how to build your first bot (why do I need this book...???). There is some decent info and some decent examples about how to program, but then I got to the part about how to control the bot with the infrared remote. The example uses nested IF switch blocks to program the buttons to control the robot. What...??? Oh wait, the book says, "it seems like there should be a better way to get this program to work. Don't worry, there is...". "Whew", I think to myself, they are going to show you how to easily use a switch block in measure mode (infrared > measure > remote) to program actions for each of the remote buttons when you press them (super easy way to do it, by the way). But NO, it continues, "...Use a multi-threaded remote program." "Oh, no!", I think to myself, "Are they going to ...???" Yes they do. They show you how to use multiple start blocks, each with a wait block (waiting for a button on the remote to be pressed), to program the robot's motors for movement. NOOOOO!!!! OK, some might be thinking, "What's wrong with that?" Yes, the program probably works just fine and demonstrates that you can use multiple start blocks to multithread. However, this is a very bad practice. Trying to control and/or access any sensor and/or motor from more than one thread can cause issues and produce undesired results. I know, I tried it a lot when I was first learning and stuff didn't always work as desired. I then did some research and found out that yes, you could do it, but no, it's not a good idea and could cause undesirable results. So, I've found other ways to multithread my programs. I kind of gave up hope for this book after these examples.

I was hoping that this might be another good resource for kids to use, however, I cannot recommend it. There's too much fluff, too much talking about the different models you can build and just showing you pictures of them. You don't need a book for that, you can find all of that online for free. All you need is a little section to point this out and then move on to good stuff, but the book is lacking in "good stuff" as well. There are some OK examples, but some of the examples are just not good (see above). There are't really many building instructions in it either (like most of the other books I've looked at have), I think there are two and they are pretty basic. Rather than get this book, you're better off using Google to find sites to learn stuff from. Or, if you want a book, my favorite is The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book (Full Color): A Beginner's Guide to Building and Programming Robots.

Sorry, too much fluff and not enough meat (and some not so good meat too). Two stars for the effort.

Nice read

As an American who has spent some time in Latin America, I was interested to read this book in order to compare notes with the author. While there is plenty of local color in the tale, I was not prepared for the insightful story of transformation that is the heart of the book. It is a fun and interesting read which chronicles the perspectives and adventures of a young man at two very different stages of life. The time frame of the book switches between the two periods with each chapter, contrasting the protagonist's earlier self-centered, hedonistic days with the struggles and rewards of his later married life. The story is full of interesting details about life in Lima, Peru as well as commentary on a variety of topics. If I have one complaint the book, it is that many of these details are not as fleshed out or explored as deeply as I'd have liked. I kept thinking this author has a lot more to say and look forward to more stories from him in the future.

short, smart and interesting

What makes this novella work is the story arc, the alternating perspectives of what could almost be two characters. Filled with what I found to be hilarious sexual content, Gringo mostly focuses on the growth of a man who learns to see beyond himself. Insightful without being pedantic, it's a fun and informative ride through Lima and its surroundings. It also has cool insights into education, something I appreciate as an educator. My only warnings are that the language isn't toned down, so if profanity and vulgarity offend you, approach with caution. Also, the editing was poorly done, which was distracting at times. Overall, a great fun read.

" Riveting Adventure ! "

Gringo is an amazing work that tells a unique story: an American migrating to South America. This immigrant story is unlike any I have read. It first deals with an American as a tourist and shows the carefree aspect of such a lifestyle. But then it turns the story on its head, thrusting the main character into the throes of Lima's economic uncertainties. Zach, the main character, runs the gamut between being a pleasure seeker in the seedier Night Club scene of Peru's capital to becoming a struggling teacher in a middle class neighborhood. I particularly found this teacher side warm and endearing as he teaches in an inner city school in a tough economy. The reader thus gets a gritty, inside view of a Latin American city unlike any work I have come across. The great literary style, the author's uncanny ability to describe with colorful detail, makes the read feel visceral. You forget where you are and you really feel that you are walking the streets (or taking the buses) in a Latin American city either as a pleasure seeker or a loving teacher. This great literary style keeps you mesmerized with its colorful descriptions, but it also has some interesting twists, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. And I must say that the ending, the way he brought these two lives together, was brilliant. But to unravel changes in Zach's broken web of life and make sense of an American struggling to find himself in Peru, you'll have to read the rest of the story. So put on your seat belt! It will be a riveting adventure!!!

Excellent introduction and desk reference for DBAs new to PostgreSQL

So, first of all I'm a PostgreSQL user for 7 years and an instructor for 3 years. I feel that PostgreSQL has one of the absolute best online documentation repos of any open source project. Easy to use and find answers.

However, in teaching PostgreSQL administration, I find that there are still quite a few individuals who like a comprehensive introduction to a topic. Quite a few of these individuals like that comprehensive introduction to be in book form. This is a good resource for those individuals.

WHAT I LIKE:
1) The authors are active in using PostgreSQL

It is obvious from the tone in which the book is written. Small things, like knowing that Amazon's Redshift is a fork of a PostgreSQL fork . . . aren't monumental, but give the authors credibility in my mind since I use Postgres in its community, EnterpriseDB, and Redshift flavors.

2) Concise, quick tips for administrators

There is more to PostgreSQL administration than configuration of the pg_hba.conf, postgresql.conf, and pg_ident.conf files. However, a solid understanding of these will help a new PostgreSQL user troubleshoot 80% of the issues they will likely encounter. A good but brief coverage of these files' formats, psql, and interactive/non-interactive administration are the best reasons for a new admin to buy this book.

3) Datatype discussion, including new JSON types

There has been a lot of buzz in the community regarding the newer JSON data types that some feel make PostgreSQL a serious competitor in both the relational DB world as well as the unstructured data (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc) world. This book gives a great overview of all existing datatypes as well as the new ones available in 9.4.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:

1) My preference, but I think the treatment of the PgAdmin tool is too extensive. But my default preference for almost all systems is all command line, all the time.

2) DBAs will always ask about replication. I think the chapter on replication is a VERY light treatment of the subject. So, don't buy this book if you expect a step-by-step guide with hints regarding possible problems, workarounds, tests, etc.

Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase. I bought this book to evaluate how appropriate it would be to give to my students as a reference manual. I like it for that and I wish I had something like this when I was new to PostgreSQL. If you're an active PostgreSQL DBA or power user, it might be an interesting read, but nothing amazing.

Good for basics

If you already know relational databases well and just want an introduction to PostgreSQL then this book is fine. If you are reading the Kindle version it has many links to more detailed or advanced information in blogs, articles, and the PostgreSQL documentation.

The real thing

I love this book. Gabrielle Dolan invites us to be real in life and in leadership, and she models this on every page. The book reads like a conversation with a wise friend. A wise friend who tells it like it is and has lots of funny anecdotes.

Although it is much more than a book on storytelling and presentation skills, it has some of the best advice I've seen on these topics, and as a storyteller myself, believe me I read a lot of books on storytelling and presentation skills. Dolan's tips on using push and pull stories on the organisational story grapevine, and on preparing a presentation, are gold.

Ignite is my new go-to reference for leadership and communication.

A friendly tour of straight talking for leaders

Garbielle gives us some excellent exercises to get clear on who we are, what matters to us, and the stories to convey this. The pages of my copy are folded and marked so I can refer to the exercises and work my way through in crafting some signature stories. She has 'levelling up', asking for more and getting clear on our priorities, as well as mining the depths of our experience to come up with stories that will help others shift their perception.

Gabrielle's style is relaxed and personable, like getting some awesome tips from a mate over a glass of red wine.
