A Royal Knight (The Tisaian Chronicles), by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

A Royal Knightis a short story and prequel to the novel - The Biomass Revolution. It can be read before, after or as a stand alone.

Welcome to Tisaia - The last hub of modern civilization, in a world left scorched by the nuclear fires of the Biomass Wars. Surrounded by a fortress of steel walls, and protected by a fierce and loyal Council of Royal Knights, Tisaia seems relatively safe to the average State worker and citizen. A plentiful supply of Biomass powers the cities, and food is abundant, but security has come at a terrible cost. The State will do anything to protect its resources, even if it means suppressing the rights of its citizens and deporting immigrants into the Wasteland - a virtual death sentence.

Captain McNeill is one of the most respected Royal Knights in Tisaia. Plagued with scars, a robotic arm and cancer, his men call him the Bionic soldier. For two decades he has hunted the rebels inside the great Tisaian steel walls and in the tunnels snaking deep beneath the cities. He has followed them into the Wastelands and the skeletons of cities from the old world. But the one rebel he can't seem to kill is Obi Hepe, the leader of the infamous Squad 19.

After the death of three of his men, McNeill receives a unique opportunity to capture Obi. As he leads his men into the tunnels beneath Tisaia, he finds there may be more to the mission than he was told. And quickly he finds himself fighting in the battle of his life.

From the Author
A Royal Knightis a short story and prequel to the novel -The Biomass Revolution. It can be read before, after or as a stand alone.
Inhis debut novel, Nicholas Sansbury Smith adds his voice to thegrowing fieldofDystopian literature.Set in the not too distant future,The Biomass Revolution is the story of a post-apocalyptic future still healing from the wars of the 21st century.

Unlike other Dystopian novels, The Biomass Revolution depicts a totalitarian state where the difference between good and evil isn't clear. The two accompanying short stories, A Royal Knight and Squad 19 tell both sides of the revolution. In the end, Smith wanted his readers to decide which side of the revolution they would fight.

About the Author
Nicholas Sansbury Smith is the author of several post-apocalyptic books and short stories. His newest series, Orbs, is a terrifying and suspenseful sci-fi account of a science team working in a Biosphere that finds itself suddenly cut off from the rest of the world. When the blast doors hiss open, they enter the horrifying aftermath of a cataclysmic cosmological event. Book II: Stranded will be released in early 2014.

Nicholas lives in Des Moines with his girlfriend, Andrea, and his dog, Bella. When he isn't writing, he's racing in triathlons or helping communities recover from disasters. He also runs an animal welfare non-profit called 2Rracing.

EXCELLENT READING! Complete Short Story provides prequel to companion novel.
By Abele
This story is told from the viewpoint of a man who has truly devoted his life to protecting his society from those deemed as hostile invaders. He is A ROYAL KNIGHT fighting for a cause that he deeply believes is right.

Even though it is a prequel to a novel, it is also a GREAT short story that can stand alone. I commend the author for that accomplishment. Since I enjoyed this story immensely, I decided to obtain the novel of which I am in the midst of reading.

Highly Recommended!

always more than one side to the story...

This is the final piece in the Biomass Revolution / Tisaia Chronicles for me. I have previously read and reviewed the main book, The Biomass Revolution (4 stars - [...] ) and the other prequel Squad 19 (4 stars - [...]

There is always more than one side to the story in any conflict. N.S. Smith does something most other authors don't - he not only shows you all the sides, he doesn't ask you or force you to choose a side. Some readers will root for the TDU and boo-hiss at the Royal Knight squadrons as violent oppressors. Others will see the justification behind the Royal Night's actions and label the TDU as vigilantly terrorists. Others will side with the citizens of Rohania who are just trying to survive while often getting caught in the cross fire between the TDU and the Royal knights.

If any of the above sound familiar - it's because those same perspectives have real world examples. N.S. Smith does an excellent job of drawing parallels that make you question how you view things without getting on a soap box. Who is really right or wrong in war? It often comes down to which side of the fence you find yourself stuck on when it starts.

A Royal Knight follows the story of Captain McNeill, a rare veteran Royal Knight who has seen more than his fair share of battle, which his scars and implants attest to. He also has some real reasons for labeling the TDU fighters as terrorists. This was a very interesting look into the world of the Royal Knights and served as an excellent companion to the series.

and his passion for a peaceful existence made me actually like him. After reading the prequel
By Sabrina Jean
Wow! I presumed that this was simply a short story to introduce the reader to the premise of 'The Tisaian Chronicles', but what a read!

The story follows a grizzled and experienced Captain who's had his share of modifications to his battered body. The tale continues to describe the world after the wars and what he is accustomed to as a Royal Knight of the new world. The details of the city and the protection of this law force are intriguing, but the human nature of the captain is intense!

His memories, the fellow soldiers he's lost, and his passion for a peaceful existence made me actually like him. After reading the prequel, 'Squad 19', I assumed that the Knights were all just bad guys.... Now, I'm not so sure. I'll be diving into 'The Biomass Revolution' to see who I want to cheer for, but I'm sure this amazing author won't make my decision easy! Well done!
